Born in Alberta and raised in Toronto, Porter received her formal artistic training at Toronto’s Central Technical School from 1933 to 1936, studying under a distinguished group of artists that included Carl Schaefer, Doris McCarthy, Peter Haworth, Charles Goldhammer, and Elizabeth Wyn Wood—artists whose own contributions to Canadian art are now represented in major public collections, including the National Gallery of Canada.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003ePorter’s talent was recognized early in her career. While still a student, she was selected to assist renowned Canadian artist Arthur Lismer with his art classes for children at the Art Gallery of Toronto. Following her studies, she pursued a career in the arts, working in Toronto in both fine art and interior design before moving to Brantford, Ontario, after her marriage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eWorking primarily in watercolour, Porter developed a highly personal and sensitive approach to the Ontario landscape. Her paintings capture the quiet beauty of rural communities, farmhouses, country churches, village streets, fields, and rolling hills, with a particular sensitivity to light, colour, atmosphere, and composition. Over the course of her career, she produced approximately 200 works, painting from the 1930s until her final work in 1996, completed at the age of 82.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eAlthough Porter exhibited relatively selectively, her work attracted considerable admiration. She held a private exhibition in 1977 followed by an exhibition at the Guelph Public Library in 1978, where paintings were sold even before the exhibition opened. Ultimately, Porter preferred the freedom of painting for the sheer pleasure of it rather than working toward exhibitions, creating works for family and friends and accepting select commissions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eHer work received renewed attention later in her life, appearing in the \u003ci\u003eGuelph Mercury\u003c\/i\u003e, the \u003ci\u003eHamilton Spectator\u003c\/i\u003e, and the \u003ci\u003eBrantford Expositor\u003c\/i\u003e. She was also the subject of an exhibition at the Guelph retirement residence where she lived in 1999. The village things remind me of A.J. Casson, without however looking as if she had ever seen them. She has a faultless instinct for composition.
