Collection: Charles-Ernest De Belle

(1873 – 1939) ARCA

Born in Budapest, Hungary, De Belle studied in Paris (1889-1892), and then received an annual grant from the Royal Academy, London, that enabled him to travel and study in Antwerp. After working in England and Ireland as a newspaper illustrator (1893 – 1912), he came ot Canada in 1912, and settled in Montreal by 1914. A painter of pastel and oil portraits and landscapes, especially winter scenes, his style combines Symbolism and Art Nouveau. He is represented in the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the MMFA. He exhibited with the RCA from 1914 – 1938 and the AAM from 1913 – 1936.
