Collection: Joshua Joseph Biehn

(active 1891 – 1932)

Joshua Joseph Biehn (often listed simply as Joshua Biehn or Joshua (Joseph) Biehn) was a Canadian painter active from the late nineteenth century into the early twentieth century, with a documented period of activity of roughly 1891–1932. His work is associated with late Victorian and early modern Canadian art, and sources describe him as a painter of portraits and scenes of contemporary Canadian life, including a noted focus on Black sitters that has drawn interest from later scholars.

Working in Toronto, Ontario, Biehn was a figurative and genre painter. Working in both oil and watercolour he painted street life in the city, focusing on such professions as street vendors and shoe shine boys, as well as children.
