Collection: Leonard Hutchinson
(1896 – 1980) RCA, CAR, CSGA, CSPE, OSA, PDCC
Born in Manchester, England, Hutchinson studied at the Polchester School under H. Sabino; and after coming to Ontario in 1912, at the Hamilton School of Art under John Gordon. He remained actively working on his art in Ontario: Hamilton (1924 – 1949), Langstaff (1951 – 1962), Richmond Hill (1963 – 1971) and Thornhill (1972 – 1980) where he died. While he painted some landscapes in oil, he is best known for his colour woodblock and linoblock prints and engravings on Japanese rice paper. He also worked in watercolour. His subjects were mainly working people such as farmers and the every day workers. During his career, Leonard Hutchinson worked as a commercial artist, teacher and Director of the Art Gallery of Hamilton. He exhibited with the RCA between 1924 – 1939 and the AAM between 1932 – 1939. His work can be viewed in the AGH, AGO, NGC and the New York Public Library as well as many private collections.
